A setup for the cabin

"I've had a Rancilio Silvia V1 for 15+ years and she has worked flawlessly during that time. I replaced a sensor, upgraded the portafilter screen, upgraded the steam wand over time and she continues to perform wonderfully. We recently purchased a vacation cabin and of course we can't go without our daily fix so when it came time, I purchased another Silvia and Rocky combo. I now have her dialed in up there as well and she is doing the same for us whenever we are on vacation. Couldn't be happier with this purchase."

Great machines - slight learning curve

"Recently, I had purchased a total automatic espresso machine, and realized the I didn't like the fact that I couldn't control the outcome or strength of my cup of coffee. Sent it back as I didn't like the machine and its very high cost. Frustrated, I did a lot of research on semi-automatic espresso makers and found the Rancilio Silva. The price of the Rancilio Silva and the Rocky Grinder was slightly over what I paid for the total automatic espresso maker I sent back. Seemed like a great deal! Well, it has taken me quite a few hours on You Tube watching videos on how to use the Rancilio, but I think I am understanding what a great espresso machine it is. It took me about a month to get the system of making really great espresso coffee down. Now I am totally sold on this great counter top espresso maker. Don't be put off by the daily maintenance and the lack of PID. First I thought that it was a bad idea that it is a single boiler and cycles heat. Now I understand the rhythms of the coffee maker and I have adapted to it. I make the espresso first, and then let machine heat back up for steam. Works great for me and I am getting to be a much better espresso maker:) The videos on You Tube, as well as the owners guide, state that you should clean the machine daily. Considering that I only make one cup of coffee a day, I wait for three or four days before I clean the espresso maker with the cleaner. However, daily, I brush out the seal under the group head, clean the steam wand, and run water through the group head. Because it is a good 15 minute routine to clean with the two different cleaners for the machine and the steam wand, I honestly don't see any reason to do this major cleaning after just making one cup of coffee a day. I have better things to do with my day, like walk dogs:). One suggestion is to use distilled water to keep the machine from caking up with minerals in your water. Tastes ok. Over all, I would say that for the price for the Rancilio Silva is very good and it will give you terrific espresso and very hot frothy milk. Rocky Grinder is top notch - made of metal. Pros: Excellent grinds of coffee - many settings. Cons: Major cleaning out between the blades means you have to unscrew the coffee holder, and sweep out any grinds. That is the only disadvantage I see. The grinds of coffee are superior to any grinder that I have ever used even though its stated that this is an entry level grinder?? Will outlast any grinder on the market."

"So happy with this purchase. I have been using a LaPavoni for years with great results, except for the constant repairs. This machine is such a massive improvement. Proper temp for the shot, and I can pull as long of a shot as I need. Dedicated steam heating unit... on and on, I am in love. The grinder is amazing as well, so nice to be able to grind TOO fine. Actually had to back it off of the finest setting, and it is so quiet, it doesn't wake up the whole house."
