Set of 6 espresso cups & a can of illy Espresso
South African artist William Kentridge’s career spans film, drawing and theater, frequently blending elements of each into integrated works of art. He is perhaps best known for his non-traditional animation technique using charcoal drawings on a single piece of paper to create works of extraordinary depth, often with political and social themes. His art has been exhibited at the Venice Biennale, MOMA the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and many museums and galleries world-wide. He is currently working on Shostakovich’s The Nose, to premier at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 2010.
"The aim is to design by looking at the reflection, not the surface of the design"; this is how William Kentridge explains the concept behind one of the sources of inspiration and techniques on which he bases his work, and his contribution to the illy Art Collection.
The cup and saucer interact in a subtle game of mirrors; the static images on the saucer come to life on the reflected surface of the cup, depending on the viewing angle and proximity to the saucer.
His art investigates the legacy that apartheid and colonialism have left in South Africa, and features a highly personal combination of charcoal sketches, prints, collages, film and theatre.
